Letter from Town Leadership

A Working Town with a Long Memory

Milton's government priorities are practical: keep services reliable, publish decisions clearly, preserve the Broad Street historic district, and make room for the next chapter of local business. We are a small town with state-level history and active public work in front of us.

"The standard is simple: clear records, reliable utilities, and stewardship that holds up fifty years from now."

Thomas Day

"By the 1850s, Milton housed the largest free Black cabinetmaker's workshop in North Carolina."

Thomas Day purchased Union Tavern in 1848 and ran a workshop whose output reached leading institutions, including the North Carolina Governor's Mansion and the Smithsonian's collections. His story is now interpreted at the Thomas Day State Historic Site, NC's newest state historic site (designated 2024).

Moses Roper

"Born near Milton, he published his narrative in 1837 and carried that testimony across the Atlantic."

Moses Roper, born enslaved near Milton around 1815, escaped bondage and became an abolitionist author and speaker. His autobiography and international lectures form a central part of Milton's documented history and ongoing public education work.
